  • The Decorative Shield Workshop

In this workshop shields are made to represent the species or element the students chose for their masks. The shields symbolizes the students’ readiness to step into their power and to protect and defend that which is meaningful to them in the world. Students are learning to see themselves as protectors, or stewards, of our world.

    Decorative Shields and Masks Workshop
The Decorative Shield Workshop is facilitated by San Francisco-based costume designer Debra Bauer, winner of nine costume design awards from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle and four Dramalogues from the Los Angeles Theatre Critics. She has worked in San Francisco with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, San Jose Repertory, Magic Theater, ACT, the Eureka Theatre and the legendary Angels of Light. In New York she has designed for the Classic Stage and the Roundabout Theatre companies.

At Jamaica High School the shield workshop enriches the teachings on the Middle East and India where students read the poetry of Rumi and selections from The Arabian Nights and The Ramayana. Learners gain an appreciation of the wealth and beauty that surround them. The treasure chests of emeralds, rubies, pearls, diamonds, silks and brocades that reward the hero are metaphors for the riches a successful journey of self discovery can bring. The treasure students are discovering is an appreciation for the rich resources they share among themselves and the incredible beauty, mystery and diversity of life that inhabits the world at this moment in history.

Supplies for this workshop include cardboard, glue, glue guns and sticks, gesso, paint and paintbrushes, boxcutters, scissors, faux fur, fabrics, feathers, glitter, gaffing tape and elastic.
